Mapping & Glaciers reflects on the changing landscapes—both metaphorical and actual—of our times. With choreography, film, and direction by Karen Stokes and original music by Samuel Lipman, the performance merges film, dance, and music to explore human concepts of territory and connection in a world of melting glaciers.
The work explores human interaction with nature through the vast, contradictory, and beautiful identities of maps. It examines manmade and natural boundaries that shape us through tribalism, constructs of power, and the shifting geological terrain affected by climate change. While questioning the often-devastating absurdity of human choices, Mapping & Glaciers also speaks to the resiliency of human nature. It creates space for hope—for the possibility of connection and interconnection.
